What does it take to make a career in Real Estate? Can anyone just jump right in and make enough money to create a lifestyle they believe is the right fit for them?
I am the eternal optimist and want for people to succeed in anything they decide to do. But lets face it I am not the one that will make that happen, it comes down to the individuals action and the people they hang around.
This Blog is going to be full of bits and pieces (rules) I have learnt and still learning along my journey as a real estate agent. Not only is it something my kids could read back over when I am gone but I hope it will be useful to those people considering a career in real estate, real estate practice management, property investment, and buying or selling real estate.
When a team is effective there is a strong blend of ethics and values enacted by organisational subcultures and consistent to the dominant culture. It should be constantly monitored and addressed so interaction with the environment is socially and commercially effective.
Let’s take some time to understand a few key elements that will assist any individual in the real estate agency.
Values represent stable, long lasting beliefs about what is important in a variety of situations. They are able to be assessed to decide what is right or wrong, good or bad. Values will dictate our priorities, our preferences and desires. They will influence our motivation and decisions. It is important to recognise that values are socially desirable, what people say they value (called espoused values) may differ from what they truely value (enacted values).
Personal values will incorporate cultural values as well as other values socialised by parents, friends and personal life events.
These values are a shared or common set of beliefs within the organisation. This set of beliefs will assist in the template of what happens in the workplace. Creating a organisational culture which is a basic pattern of shared assumptions, values and beliefs which is considered to be the right way of thinking about, and acting on, problems and opportunities facing the organisation.
Ethics are moral principals or values that determine if actions are right or wrong and the outcome is good or bad.
Have a think about your personal values. Write them down somewhere, they are a great thing to reflect on and add to as often as you feel necessary.
Then look at the workplace your in and assess if your values are similar. Remember values are socially desirable. Does the team need to get together and build/discover similarities?
As a team member in a real estate office it is imperative to recognise ethical behaviour will enhance corporate performance. We are members of the Real Estate Institute of NSW. An industry organisation that works tirelessly to push for the real estate industry to be considered as professionals and bound by a code of ethics. Check them out.
Next week I will move onto planning, so I best go and start planning.
For so many the big world of real estate looks easy from the outside. In reality there is so much that goes on behind the scene and therefore its very important to get some good foundations to start.
So starting out in the real estate industry can very quickly go from total elevation of positive emotion to a high stress situation without these foundations. They will keep you on track, and ensure your in the best mind set to achive results from an action plan.
The first couple of things I would suggest is;
1. Have a clear reason’s why you want to create a career in real estate. This will fuel your motivation, pick you up when needed, power you to do what ever it takes. Write down a couple of big reasons (goals) and then post them some where you can see them every day.
2. Find a mentor or someone’s coat tail to hang on too. A highly motivated and successful person in life, and with runs on the board in real estate. This person should know your WHY (step 1) and is going to assist in pointing you in the right direction, and keep you on track. “You are who you hang around” so choose wisely and continue to look for new people like this. The more people you find that have experience and the quality of life you want the better person and agent you will become. It may be a Real estate agent, Principal, Sales Manager, Coach, personal trainer……….Just find someone 🙂
3. Turn you Why into Numbers. Real estate in the beginning is a numbers game. The more people you can effectively connect with and feed to your pipeline, the quicker your business will grow and become financially rewarding. Ask your sales manager or principal how reverse engineer if they don’t know email me and we can sit down and chat about your future career. firstname.lastname@example.org
